Top Tips for a winning entry!

Our Head Judge Barry Squires- Previously of Westpac NZ, now owner of Golden Acres Orchard in the Bay of Plenty- has been involved with awards programmes for a long time. Before taking on our Head Judge Role for the 2018 BOP ExportNZ awards, Barry had previously been Convener of Judges for the Auckland ExportNZ awards for 4 years and a Judge for 8 years. It’s safe to say he’s seen his fair share of entries in his time so we asked him to put together his Top Tips for how to submit a winning entry!

  1. Be succinct: make sure you know what you want to say and how you are going to say it. Get the key points across.
  2. Be yourself: don't try to impress. All the entrants have great stories to tell, that makes it all the more important to tell your story well and authentically.
  3. Be prepared: make sure you've reviewed your strategy. Know where your growth is going to come from. A big part of judging is reviewing the entrant’s strategy, not just where you've come from but also where you are going.
  4. Perfect your pitch: You are selling yourselves to the judges, so treat them like a new prospective customer; ask yourself why should they buy from you, what is your competitive advantage, what makes you better than the competition.
  5. Simplify your specifics: Don't assume the judges know what business you're in, this especially applies to Tech firms. Make sure you can describe what you do in simple terms and don't use technical jargon.
  6. Have fun!! It should be an enjoyable and enervating process to enter and hopefully win. Everyone loves telling the story of their business so get stuck in.

One of the most rewarding parts of the ExportNZ Awards is hearing the stories of our exporters, and we can’t wait to hear yours!

Entries are open now so take this little slice of wisdom from Barry and head over to enter now!
